HEADACHES: WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Headaches can be caused by a number of things, and the majority of time can be linked to non-serious sources like pulled or tensed muscles, sinus infections, or blood vessel swelling (like a migraine). While we’ve probably all had a headache that felt like our head was about to explode, most of us are able to find relief through OTC pain relievers, sleep, stretching or massage. However, there are cases where headaches can be a sign of something more severe and those symptoms should not be ignored. During National Headache Awareness Week, June 1-7th, we want to teach our patients about what causes headaches and whether their headache symptoms are a sign of something more serious.

Headache symptoms you shouldn’t ignore:

Sudden, Severe Headache – A sudden, painful headache should never be ignored, especially if it is accompanied by numbness or weakness and only affects one side of the body. If you or a loved one ever experiences these symptoms, seek medical assistance immediately, as this is a warning sign of a stroke.

Morning Headaches – Many of us wake up with morning headaches from poor sleeping positions, clenching the jaw, or stimulant withdrawals. Morning headaches are no cause for alarm unless your headache is worse in the morning and gradually improves as the day goes on or if you throw up. Additionally, if exercise, coughing, or bending and kneeling worsen your headache than your headache may be a symptom of a brain tumor. While only 8% of people with a brain tumor reported a headache as their first sign, if these symptoms are unusual a visit to the Dr. Duma can help determine the cause.

Severe Headaches Accompanied by Stiff Neck and Fever – Vomiting, nausea, high fever, and a stiff neck are all signs of meningitis, which can result in brain damage and death if not treated immediately. Meningitis is caused by a bacterial or viral infection that causes the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord to swell.

The “Worst Headache of Your Life” –
While this may sound melodramatic, the term “worst headache of your life” is actually found in medical textbooks to describe the pain produced by subarachnoid hemorrhaging caused by a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. If you are experiencing a stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, or light sensitivity, you may need to be treated for a non-fatal aneurysm before a second episode can cause fatal results.

While many headaches are no cause for alarm, they can also be a telling sign of your brain health. Learning headache warning signs can help you stay in tune with your body and should be reviewed every year during Headache Awareness Week. If you have been experiencing headaches, Newport Beach Neurosurgeon Dr. Duma may be able to help you determine the cause and provide treatment options. For severe, or sudden headaches please seek medical assistance immediately, as our blog is intended as a reference and not a substitute for diagnosis and treatment.
