HOW DOES IMMUNOTHERAPY TREAT BRAIN TUMORS?
In 2013 around 70,000 American’s were diagnosed with a new brain tumor, and of them, 25,000 were malignant. There are multiple forms of treatment available, however, immunotherapy is considered one of the best treatment options for fighting brain tumors. Depending on when a malignant tumor is diagnosed, immunotherapy has been shown to double life expectancy. So, what exactly is immunotherapy and how does it work?
What is Immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy is a treatment method that uses a patient’s immune system to fight diseases like cancer. While the body recognizes diseases like chicken pox or measles as imposters and a defense is build up to prevent recurring attacks, brain tumors somehow build a defensive wall that prevents the immune system from attacking the brain tumor. This “wall” suppresses the immune system and allows the tumor to rebuild itself.
Immunotherapy is what breaks down the wall and prevents the tumor from re-growing once it has been treated. During immunotherapy your immune system is stimulated to more efficiently attack cancer cells. Additionally, you may be given man-made immune system proteins that target specific cancer cells. Depending on your tumor, Dr. Duma will work with you to boost your overall immune system, or he will help train your immune system to attack cancer cells. Additionally, Dr. Christopher Duma may recommend combining immunotherapy with other treatments like radiation or chemotherapy for improved results.
Types of Immunotherapy:
- Monoclonal Antibodies – Man-made “immune system proteins” that are designed to target specific cancer cells. These can be very affective in combatting certain cancers.
- Non-Specific Immunotherapies – These treatments provide an overall improvement to the immune system, but are still affective at boosting the immune system to fight cancer cells.
- Cancer Vaccines – Some cancers can be prevented or treated through vaccines, particularly cancers that are linked to viral infections. Usually these are given to healthy people, however, some vaccines can be beneficial to people who already have cancer.
Treating cancer and brain tumors through immunotherapy can greatly improve a patient’s ability to fight cancer or extend life expectancy rates.
