WHAT IS TOMOTHERAPY?

Patients who have recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor will quickly discover that there are many different treatment options available for removing or shrinking tumors. Many of our patients wonder what is the best treatment option for them? There is no specific cookbook protocol when it comes to treating brain tumors. Often a combination of procedures is combined to create a full management approach. It’s not uncommon for radiation to be combined with chemotherapy, although not all patients will be encouraged or required to have both. Sometimes, radiation alone can shrink a tumor enough to allow the physician to remove it. In cases where you may be encouraged to try radiation, a technique called TomoTherapy may be recommended.

What is TomoTherapy?
TomoTherapy is an advanced combination of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and computed tomography(CT). Essentially, TomoTherapy allows the surgeon direct individual radiation beams to difficult-to-reach tumors. This technology helps to prevent healthy tissue from being damaged during a procedure.

Before a TomoTherapy treatment, Dr. Duma will use 3D images to locate the tumor and any potential areas of the brain that may be at risk during surgery. At this point the doctor will decide how much radiation is necessary. With that information the TomoTherapy Hi-Art System helps to determine the correct position, intensity of radiation, and pattern needed to provide the treatment Dr. Duma has approved.

Advantages of TomoTherapy
The main benefit of TomoTherapy is its ability to maximize treatment with fewer side effects. Additionally, TomoTherapy treatments are faster than other intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). Studies have also found that TomoTherapy is especially effective for treating complex cases that may not be treated as successfully with other therapy options.

What Can TomoTherapy Treat?
TomoTherapy can treat a variety of cancers and tumors including:
